- Land Patents - The original sale of land by the federal government is
recorded in a land patent. This could be a available aid to
locating your early settler ancestors. You might find a land patent for an
ancestor by searching at
The Bureau of Land Management. The site also allows you to
view an image of the document, which will tell you where (county
and state) the purchaser lived at the time of the purchase.
- Locating Land - A good explanation of the system for mapping township
sections is offered in the "Determining Location" topic located
near the bottom of the
Illinois Public Domain Land Tract Sales webpage
at Office of Illinois Secretary of State.

- 1850 Journal of the Franklin Institute describes
a patent for a grain and maize harvester issued 08 Oct 1850 to Edmund QUINCY of Lacon
"The nature of my invention consists in a set of metallic fingers or knives (concave, flat, or fluted, and may be straight, or curved in the
direction of their motion) arranged radially upon a revolving shaft, in such a manner or distance apart as to allow the straw, stems or
stalks of grain to pass between them until the heads, ears, or seed, coming in contact with the fingers, are cut off by them, and thrown into
the elevators, which also revolve as the shafts, and are carried by the elevators into an inclined spout, from which it falls into a wagon
by the side of the machine, or other proper receptacle."
Claim. - "What I claim as my invention, is the use of the revolving shaft, in combination with a system of fingers, teeth, or knives
arranged on the shaft as described, and for the purpose herein set forth, not confining myself to any particular size, shape, or curvature." page 315

- 1873 Chronicle reports "Mice among matches
bear the responsibility of the fire which lately consumed a dwelling house in Belle Plain, Marshall county, Illinois. But the testimony of
Charles S. FURST, that a box of matches, accidentally set on fire, as he and three tippling and card-playing companions were leaving his
dry goods store in Brooklyn, at four o'clock last Sunday morning, was guilty of destroying the building and damaging two
adjacent buildings, inflicting a loss of $21,000 and imperiling the lives of several persons, did not prevent the arrest of FURST on
suspicion of arson. His stock was insured by the "Phonix," for $2,500, and by the "Imperial," for 2,000." page 85
