David Vernay and Mary Carr Vernay's son James David Vernay fought in the Battle of Vicksburg and received the Medal of Honor for gallantry in the face of danger. He volunteered to take the Steamer Horizon passed the Confederate Batteries. He received a Gold Medal and was breveted the rank of Major after the battle. He married Mary V. Waters. He lived in Texas before moving to Kinsley, Kansas. He moved to Washington D.C. after living in Kansas where he passed away in 1918.
